10 Ideas for New Hobbies for Older Men

As we get older, it becomes more and more difficult to keep up with the things we love to do. Our bodies just don’t have the same resilience and capability as they used to, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun and find things we enjoy doing. So, we decided to put together a list of hobbies for the older folk who don’t want life to just stop post 50th.

1. Fishing

An age-old favourite for all men everywhere. Fishing is great as you can either do it with your friends or alone. You can spend all day out on the water, relaxing and talking or thinking, mixed with the excitement of catching a few fish. Sounds perfect.

2. Golf

Another age-old favourite. Golf has been used for years as a way for men to meet new people and create connections with each other. Not only is it great mentally as it requires quite a bit of concentration, but it also will allow you to get physically active as you walk the golf course.

3. Gardening

A slower hobby, but a rewarding one. When you take up gardening, you will have so much to learn about different plants and the best ways to make them flourish. Taking in new information at an older age is great for the brain. The other great thing about gardening is getting to see the results of it at the end of day. You will have a beautiful garden to show off to your family and friends, and feel a sense of pride in what you’re doing.

4. Cooking

With the amazing vegetables and herbs you grow in your garden, why not take up cooking too? You can learn new recipes and get experimenting with all different ingredients. This keeps your meals interesting and stops you from getting in routine with what you eat each day.

5. Guitar

Learning a new instrument is a great way to keep your brain active, and we think the guitar is one of the best suited for older men. So, pick some of your favourite songs and get learning!

6. Cycling

It's important to keep as active as you can as you get older. Cycling is a great way to stay active as you can go as slow or fast as you like, and explore new parts of the country you maybe haven’t been to. Choosing a scenic route somewhere in nature to have a slow cycle for not only your body, but mental health too.

7. Rock climbing

Rock climbing is one of the more adventurous items on this list. It may not be for everyone, but if you’re up for the challenge get strapped in and have fun!

8. Fantasy Football

If your body is past the stage of playing football yourself, why not indulge in some fantasy football? It allows you to think strategically about the game and find a community to be a part of, and keeps you close to the sport you love.

9. Learn a new language

Obviously learning a new language is very good for the brain, but it’s also fun. You can download an app or attend in person lessons and pick up a new skill. You’ll become more worldly and could even take it as far as planning a trip to the country where the language is spoken if you’re able to. Test out your skills on the real deal.

10. Reading

Something we’re encouraged to do since we’re kids, but it’s never too late to start. Get a hold of some classics or recommendations from family and friends, and get reading! Swap it with some of your TV time, as reading is much better for your overall health.

We know that picking up new hobbies and interests as you get older can be tough, but it’s so important to keep yourself active and enjoying life. To make things easier, give yourself all the support you need to do new things. Whether it’s inviting a friend along or investing in the right equipment to make the transition smoother. A lot of these require physical exercise, and it’s important to take care of your body as you get older and put more strain on it. Invest in protective clothing, high quality shoes and supportive socks to make it easier for yourself. And lastly, enjoy it, otherwise there’s really no point.
